Music Love // September 2016

Hello, lovelies!

Happy Fall, first of all! This is an exciting time of the year. There is actually a chill in the air, which just started on Sunday. I can finally start wearing boots and flannels and sipping hot drinks!

Today, I'm going to share some music that I've recently been loving. I won't say much about it. I'll just let it speak for itself :) Tell me what you think!

Coffee Shop Chats - The Third

Yay! I was hoping that Tessa would post another of these. I love these chats! They're so fun. Click the link to see the rules for this link-up!

What I did this week

You won't believe it - I went on a mini road trip by myself! Wednesday was my day off of work, and I had heard that there was adoration outside in the evening around half an hour outside of the city I used to live in. The city was about 1 hr and 1/2 away, and I'd never driven anywhere that far on my own before, so I was nervous, but I made it with the help of my GPS and a phone call to my dad (but, really, guys, my dad is awesome). I arrived in the city in the afternoon around dinner time and was able to see my new baby cousin who is the most adorable little munchkin ever. I had dinner with my grandma, and stopped in at a bookstore before heading out to the church. I met a friend, and we sat together. Adoration was amazing. I was overwhelmed with the beauty of it - adoring our Savior out under the stars. I was able to go to confession, and it was a very peaceful time. I'm really glad I was able to go, even though it was so far away.

Also, that morning, I started spiritual direction with my priest friend who is pastor of the churches on the Reservation where my family is. The first session went well, and I'm excited for this new way to grow closer to God.

Food I've enjoyed made

Guys, I'm really bad in the kitchen, okay? I have been eating super simple things lately, because I don't want to waste food by cooking things that will turn out badly. So mostly sandwiches and cereal - I'm serious. Anyway, the other night I decided to try to make spaghetti. Let's say it wasn't a masterpiece. I think I cooked the noodles too long and the meat I tried to use for the sauce turned out to taste sour. I didn't want to get sick, so I threw the whole thing out and ate candy for dinner. That's a completely healthy alternative, what are you talking about? Ahem.

Drinks I've enjoyed

On the plus side, I found a really easy recipe for coffee vanilla milkshakes, and I've been loving those. *Goes to make one so I can take a picture for you to see*

You're welcome

Music I've enjoyed

I've been noticing lately that my taste in music has changed a little. Or maybe I'm just discovering more music than I knew about before. Either way, I've been enjoying some music my aunt introduced me to, including Switchfoot, and Jack Johnson. Also, one of the only popular songs that I like right now is Hello by Adele. All the feels.

Movies I've enjoyed

Well, it's mainly been shows. I started watching Downton Abbey a few weeks ago, and I was like, "Oh, this is a cute show. Not much feels crushing going on, but I like it. It's interesting." And then came season 3 and I was like, "WHOA SLOW DOWN, NOW YOU'RE OVERDOING THE WHOLE FEELS THING. I TAKE IT BACK, I DIDN'T MEAN IT, GO BACK TO BEING THE INNOCENT LITTLE SHOW THAT YOU WERE AT THE BEGINNING!" I stopped watching it for almost a week just to recover from the shock and get over a character's death (and I had other things I needed to get done). I started season 4 on Saturday morning, and I cried through pretty much the whole first episode. But of course I'm still going to watch the rest. #nerdprobs

Currently loving

My job. Really, guys. I was so, so nervous before I started here. What if I had only liked the people at the old facility, and don't actually like being an aide wherever I go? I was so worried about the probability of being around younger coworkers than at my last job because I'm socially awkward I thought I worked better around older adults. And then I started work, and right away I loved it. I realized that I really do love being a CNA. I love the many different people I am able to work with - coworkers and residents. I love listening to their stories, and how each person has their own little quirks and preferences. I love being an aide, and I hope I'm able to do this for a long time. I really thank God for this blessing because if I didn't like my job, I don't know how I'd make it through the next at least 8 months.

Currently hoping

That I am able to visit my family for Thanksgiving! I don't think that I'll be able to get Christmas off, since I just started working here, and they'll probably give the holiday to the people who worked it last year. So, Thanksgiving seems like the best option to aim for, because New Years is probably pretty big, too. So please pray that I am able to get off for a good few days around Thanksgiving so that I can go see my family!

Looking forward to

A trip to see my best friends Mia and Ellie and Esther in August! The former two are both getting back from World Youth Day and Ellie is also getting back from SPEC, where she worked as a missionary in England for a year. She's bringing her boyfriend, too, and I am excited to meet him in person. Mia and Ellie are both going back to SPEC towards the end of August, so this will be the last I will see them for a while. *Royal sulk because they're leaving me behind* I am really, really hoping to be able to go and visit them, possibly in February, so please pray that that works out, as well!

To Answer Some Questions

What's on your summer reading list?

Okay, so I stayed up till 4 am on Saturday night to finish To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han. Yes. Me. Staying up that late to finish a YA book. You know it must have been good. It was so beautifully written, and it felt so real. The dialogue sounded just like how teens talk now days. I could also relate so much to what Lara Jean was feeling when her sister left for college. In my case, I was the big sister who left, but I still felt her pain at being separated from the person she's spent her entire life with, and also the strain of all of the responsibilities she had to take on when Margot left. This book really spoke to me, because I'm going through a lot of what the characters in the book went through (even though I didn't write love letters that got sent out on accident). So, anyway, my quest for the summer is to be able to find and read the second book P.S. I Still Love You. Honestly, I don't really have anything else I'm planning on reading. I mean, I am going to read more, but I don't have something specific. I'm heading out to the library later to get a library card and I'm gonna look around while I'm there.

How did you celebrate the Fourth of July?

In all honesty, I did nothing to celebrate. I know. I'm a horrible citizen. But at work we had a 4th of July party for all of the residents and staff and their families on the 1st of the month, so that kind of counts.

Convo Starters

Do you have any big plans for this summer?

Is there some special project you're currently working on, or that you've just completed?

What's on your summer reading list?

How did you celebrate the Fourth of July?

Do you write more during the summer or take a break?

What do you drink at Starbucks on hot days?

Do you prefer summer or fall?

Honest Music

Happy New Year, everyone! How is your 2016 going so far? You guys have resolutions, or are you not into that kind of thing? I have a few that I've set for myself. Some are for this blog. Like, I've not used a single gif this whole time I've been posting (which has been about 6 months). So, I'm gonna try to use gifs this year. *scrolls around on Pinterest and can't find many that fit in this post* Another of my goals is to write more about things that I have an opinion on... "At least 3" is what I wrote in my journal. And the last goal is to post about spiritual things. I haven't done a single one that involves faith yet, and I really want to post one soon. Any topic ideas for that one?

But today, this post is not all about my New Year's Resolutions.

A while back when I did The Song Tag I talked about doing a post about "honest music", and explaining to you guys what that means in my opinion. This is going to be my first post where I actually express my opinion throughout the whole thing on just one topic, so bear with me.

First, we have to start at what true talent means. For me, using your talent in a way you love and not just what you know everyone else will love is the way to truly effect people. I look around at famous creative people (artists, actors, writers etc.) and think, "This is great, but I know you don't mean it. I know you aren't putting your whole heart into it, and thus, the effect it could have on me isn't as great as it could be. Why don't you show us what you truly love or are truly feeling, and you will be a lot happier along with the people who connect with you on it?"

Sure, you can have a great voice, and you could write an abundance of songs that millions of people like, but why spend your time on it if you're not in love with it as well?

I see this a lot in the music industry, especially in the Christian genre. Instead of hearing people express things that sound like they mean it, I hear them singing things just because they know people will think it's a good song. What I usually want to hear in Christian music is either an artist directly praising and worshiping God, or telling about a struggle that they're going through but that they know God will help them with in the end. What I don't want to hear are songs about how great it is that nothing that we do matters because Jesus has already won the war. I'm not saying that I don't agree that He has already died for everything we will ever do. But at the end of your life when you stand before Him are you really going to want to say, "I lived my life doing whatever I wanted because I knew You already had it all covered"? Wouldn't you rather say, "I stayed away as much as I could from things that I know would hurt You"?

Sorry, I kind of got off topic. Where was I? Oh, yes, Christian music not always sounding real.

The thing is, it's not that it doesn't sound like good music when they do what I don't prefer, it's that it it doesn't sound real - like they mean it. It sounds empty - like they're just singing and hoping that they might somehow make somebody's day better. Which isn't wrong. But is that really what people want to hear, anyway? Something that doesn't say, "I'm singing what I'm feeling, and those who feel the same can join me"?

*gasp*

There it is. That's what I've been trying to say this whole time. It finally made its way out onto the page.

So now that I've got my thoughts properly expressed, do you want some examples of what I think real Christian (or actually any kind of) artists are?

I'm not going to wait for your reply, because I'm assuming that if you've made it this far by now you do want to know.

So, you ready?

Prepare for my super long list.

Rich Mullins

Colton Dixon

Owl City

Adam & I

And now you're probably screaming. "That's it? That's all you've got? And here I thought you actually had a valid point and were going to recommend some good stuff, but that's really all you have for me? I've never even heard/listened to half of these people before!"

This is all I've got. But I do have a few more words to say about why these artists are in my opinion "honest".

1) I can feel that they mean what they're saying, even if I don't always understand it.

2) They don't care if no one agrees with them; they say what they mean because it's their song. It's between them and God as it should be. After all, they're not singing to anyone other than Him. They're not afraid of being misunderstood or laughed at or completely ignored, because they are using their talent in a real way.

3) They believe that as long as their true feelings are expressed, it doesn't matter if anyone finds a connection with them; God is the One who knows and they are using their talent for Him because He gave it to them in the first place.

Now before you think that these are the only artists I like and listen to, they're not the only ones. I like a lot of other artists and songs. I just don't always feel like they're being "honest" in their music. Sometimes I feel like some of their songs are, but the majority of them aren't. The ones I've listed, I feel like the majority of their songs are real.

Rich Mullins - A lot of his songs express his feelings of loneliness and his search for God's presence. It may seem dark when I say it like that, but it doesn't feel depressing when I listen to the words of his songs. I feel like I'm stepping into his mind, maybe reading just what he would write in a prayer journal. He is being honest with God. He's not having a horrible day and then coming to God and feeling like he has to push it all aside because God wouldn't want to hear it. He's taking everything to his Maker because he knows that He sees it all, already.

Colton Dixon - Some of his songs I do feel like he is just trying to sell something that people would like, but most of them I don't. He sings some things that make me feel like his music is a mix of Rich Mullins and Owl City together - there is a certain hint of dreaminess in the same song where he is being serious. You may think that those things don't mix, but just listen to him and see if you can detect it.

Owl City - I don't like all of his songs, either, and I do sometimes feel like he's just saying something because he knows people will enjoy it. I actually feel most like that about his Christian music. But most of the time his music sounds so unique. Most guys don't sing about fairytale stuff or about things in such a poetic way, but Owl City does. I don't understand what he was thinking about when he was writing the words a lot of the time; only he could know what he is thinking. And that's what I like about it. He's being himself.

Adam & I - This duet is probably the least known on this list. They don't write in a genre that (at least I think) is popular. They aren't big. But maybe it's because they write about the small things. They write about the things that touch and inspire them and don't worry that they'll never be widely known. They're not going to change their style or their words just so that people will know their names.

So there's my opinion. Maybe, in my own way, I'm only making an excuse as to why I feel a connection with certain artists. Maybe there are artists who I don't like but who are being real and I just don't feel the connection. Maybe none of this makes sense. I'll let you decide.

This was my first post about something being "honest", and I've been thinking that I would like to do a little series of "Honest {insert topic}". What do you guys think of that idea? If you have any suggestions for it, please comment and let me know! And don't forget my questions at the top *mentally prods everyone to scroll to the beginning and read said questions*

And most importantly, what's your opinion? Am I completely wrong? Do you agree with me all the way? Just a little bit? Is there an artist who you think is "honest"? Comment away! I wanna hear from you guys!

Songs

Joy at Just Joy tagged me for The Song Tag! It's my first official tag:) This is going to be super fun. I mean, really, music is almost my life. So without further ado - Oh, wait, I gotta mention the rules.

~List the rules and include the button in your post:
                                    Ta-da!

~Tag a couple of other bloggers to do this tag (let them know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog).

And now, I present the questions and my answers to them.

1. First song that comes to your mind

Happy, by Pharell Williams. I think the original version is kinda boring, but I love the Africanized version by Alex Boye. It's a really, well, happy song and it always makes me dance.

2. A song that always makes you happy

So, a few weeks ago, we went to a concert at our friends' house. They had a duet called Adam & I play, and I loved them. We hadn't heard of them before we went, but we bought both of their albums that night. I love them because their music is so honest.* They write about things that I like to imagine I would write about, and you should give them a listen. Anyway, one of their songs that always makes me happy is We Have Love. It's a song that laughs at trouble and says everything's going to be all right <3

3. A song you hate

Current popular song that I hate? "Watch Me" (Whip/Nae-Nae). Just no. That is not real music, Emmet (sorry, I had to use that reference). "Gangnam Style" is also a really dumb song. Let me tell you that I went to a Christmas party once in the Philippines with my family and my friends' family. We watched about 30-40 performances from the different chapels that day, and at least 5 of them did a dance to "Gangnam Style". Plus, they played it in between performances, so yeah. Needless to say, we groaned every time we heard it playing.

I also don't agree with the song "Flawless" by MercyMe. I don't hate it, but it irritates me because I think the message is so *ahem* flawed. "...the truth is the cross has made you flawless" - really? I don't think so. Just because Jesus died for us does not make us perfect. He has opened the gates of heaven for us, but that doesn't mean that whatever we do is now justified.

4. Favorite romantic song

Grrr. Favorite? Okay, most of the romantic songs that I like are from musicals (I've never actually watched the last two, I've just heard these songs) :

"On My Own" from Les Miserables

"A Little Fall of Rain" from Les Miserables

"Come to Your Senses" from tick, tick...BOOM!

"Someone Else's Story" from Chess

And, yes, they are all sad romantic songs:)

5. Favorite sad song

This was a hard question. I was going to say The Last Goodbye by Billy Boyd, but I think I like I See Fire (the cover by Peter Hollens), better. All the feelings from this song...from both.

6. A song that brings back memories

Oceans by Hillsong United always makes me think of a death. The death of a certain little baby boy whom I had the pleasure to know. They played this song at his funeral, and it seemed so fitting because he died by drowning. I will always and forever remember him whenever I hear it, and I know that he is in heaven praying for the rest of us to get up there, too.

7. A song that you have been playing on repeat

This was at the beginning of the year, but I have to say this. The cover of Jai Ho done by Peter Hollens and Alaa Wardi is probably the song I have heard on repeat the most times in one day. We were visiting our friends for Christmas and a wedding, and we stayed with them for a few weeks. Both sets of our parents went out one day, and we were left to babysit our siblings with our friends and their siblings. I remember playing music almost non-stop that day, and about every third song that we would play was Jai Ho. It just makes you want to dance, and dance it made us do. Everyone had their own little dance they would do to it when they would walk through the room, and it was so fun to watch everyone:)

But the song that I've been playing on repeat currently is "Topsy Turvy" by Family Force 5. It's Alice In Wonderland themed...of course I'm listening to it constantly because of NaNo.

8. Favorite song by your favorite artist

I guess I'm going to say that Owl City- gosh, but I love Rich Mullins, too. I'm gonna say that they- oh, and Taylor Swift -are my favorites. So favorite one from each:

1) "Hot Air Balloon" by Owl City
2) "We Are Not As Strong As We Think We Are" by Rich Mullins
3) "Back to December" by Taylor Swift

9. Weirdest song you like

Okay...I'm pretty sure that I have more than just one that can fit into this category. The question is...Do you guys really want to know the answers to this? I'm gonna go ahead and give three examples: 1) "Shake It Off" by Taylor Swift. It's not got the best lyrics and it's super repetitive. I guess I like it more for the beat. 2) "Bird With A Broken Wing" by Owl City. I'm not ashamed that I like this song. It is weird, especially if you listen to the commentary behind the song, but I like the dark and strange feeling that comes when I hear it. There's also a tinge of sadness. 3) This is the weirdest one. I saved it for last, for the impact:p *takes a deep breath and says really fast* "Dum Dum" by Tedashii featuring Lecrae. *exhales* I'm not even sure why I like this song. It's definitely not real music, Emmet (I had to say that again; sorry). Maybe it's cause it's one of the only rap songs I've heard that's appropriate, even though it's still dum dum (*laughs at her dum joke*...okay I'll stop now). There you go. Now you know some things about me that make me weird.

10. All time favorite song

This is not even a fair question. I'm really bad at saying my favorite anything, especially when it's a general question. I can answer better when things are in categories, like All Time Favorite Broadway Song or All Time Favorite Pop song, though I will still tell you three answers to the question (like I did for all other questions up there). So I think I'm gonna have to give you my top favorite from some different categories.
1) My favorite musical ever is Les Miserables, and my favorite song from that is "Turning."
2) My all time favorite Catholic song is "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent."
3) All time favorite credit song is "When Can I See You Again?" by Owl City.
And I guess I'll spare you from having to read any more.

So there you go. I officially gave more than one answer to all but one of the questions, and probably had a little more fun than I should have:D

And now I tag

Annie @ Curious Wren

I hope you guys have as much fun as I did:)

*I'm going to do a post about "Honest Music" sometime. It may not be soon, but it will happen!

How's everyone's NaNo going? My novel is...almost non-existent:P Oh, well. I'm trying.
